Vasa Museum Gamla Stockholm and Hambergs!

Tuesday June 25

Robin and I, Eros, the Lipomas and the Fuerbringers took the train into Stockholm to visit the Vasa Museum.

The Vasa was built as a war ship in 1628.  It sank on it's maiden voyage within a few minutes after setting sail less than a mile from port.  The ship was poorly designed; the hull too narrow with insufficient ballast.  It lay at 32 meters below the surface until engineer and wreck researcher Anders Franzen located it with a homemade sounding device in 1956.  The ship was raised in 1961.  You can see the ship intact inside the museum.  It is a beautiful ship with intricate carvings.  95% of the ship is original.  It is really an amazing thing to see!

We had lunch afterward at a restaurant outside of the museum. I order shrimp, which arrived piled high in a bowl whole.  Intact.  Cold, black, dead eyes.... I thought I would cry and or be sick.  I think the group got a bit of amusement out of the whole ordeal.  Eros and Linda took turns peeling them. I ate a few..... no more shrimp for me!

Next we went to Gamla Stockholm (old town).  It feels like you are in an ancient city.  We went down the most narrow street in Stockholm, found a lithograph of Cape Town from the 1800's for Eros and had ficka at a little cake shop that much to Robin's delight specialized in gluten free pastries.
Ficka here, gluten free!

Robin getting in touch with her Swedish roots.

Chris had an appointment with the doctor to check his broken collar bone and found he would need surgery soon; no trip to Scotland for Chris and Eros.

We met up with Chris, Peter and Linda at Hambergs for dinner, a really good fish place.  Peter treated us all to a great meal with Champagne and wine and desert, thank you Peter!  It was great, we drank a toast to the guys, 60 this year!

Our walk home through Uppsala included a stop at a very comfortable wooden bench/lounge along the river to gaze at the sky!
