Uppsala

Uppsala is a very nice little city, big for Sweden, small to us. It's a college town. Everyone here rides a bicycle it seems and you'd better not be walking on the wrong side of the walkway or you're libel to be run over!  The river Fyris runs through Uppsala adding beauty and serving as a water supply for the city.  It flows into Lake Mälaren
Best stay on your side of the divided line!

Beautiful Uppsala
Uppsala Cathedral is a beautiful church, the largest in Scandinavia.  Construction of the church started in the mid 13th century but was not completed until 1435.  Many prominent people are buried in the cathedral, including Carl Linnaeus and Nathan Soderblom and the relics of St Erik have been preserved in the cathedral since 1273.  Robin and I were lucky enough to stop by once  during a live performance of chamber type music and experienced the magnificent acoustics of the building.

We visited the Linnaeus Museum and Gardens on one of our outings.  Carl Linnaeus (1743-1778) developed the system for classification of plants, first presented in 1735 in his famous work Systema naturae.  During the 35 years that he lived here, the house and garden became an international center for scientific research.  The museum contains furniture, art, clothing and everyday items used by his family.

I really like Uppsala and think it would be a lovely place to live...if not for the Swedish winter!
